We use HFSS for simulating Electromagnetic (EM) fields. Overview here

Paper Writing:
Writing: A Great Paper
Figures: (a) Visio (windows)->Windows Metafile-> Insert in Word-> Save Pdf (b) Visio (MAC)->pdf (c) Powerpoint--> Save as image (WMF) --> Insert in Word.
Slightly scaling fonts: Foxit PDF -> Print to Pdf with 95% scaling (to increase margin slightly).

Referencing (If you are using Word):
2. Build Reference Library: Install Chrome/Firefox/Safari Zotero extension: https://www.zotero.org/download/
5. Insert Bibliography to insert a list of all references in the paper. Use F9 to update.

Figure and Table Numbering and Referencing  (If you are using Word)
1. Use Figure Caption (ask Prof. Sen or one of the Grad students of SPARC Lab for example)
2. Use Reference-->Cross Reference Figure Only Label and Number. Then update Formatting using Format Painter. 
3. Use F9 to update.

Final paper submission:
Embed Fonts: 
Option 1: From Word, Print to pdf using Foxit pdf Printer with highest resolution and Settings as PDF/A-1b (under printer properties).  
Option 2: Embed fonts before submitting to PDF eXpress for PDF checking or source file conversion. 

Check if all font is embedded using instructions below:
1) Open file in Adobe Acrobat or Reader
2) Click on the "File" menu option
3) Click on "Document Properties"
4) Click on the "Fonts" tab
5) Each font listed should have "(Embedded) or "(Embedded Subset)" next to the font name
If all font is still not embedded, open pdf in foxit. Print to pdf using Foxit pdf Printer with highest resolution and Settings as PDF/A-1b (under printer properties). Repeat above steps to check embedding.

Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) Measurement Basics
VNA is used to measure the gain and phase response over wide frequency range (kHz- tens of GHz) for a N-port network. It is also used to measure S-parameters.
